What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign® is a modern orthodontic treatment that uses a series of clear, removable plastic aligners to gently move teeth into alignment. Each set of aligners is custom-made from a digital scan of your mouth, and you’ll switch to new trays at scheduled intervals as your treatment progresses. At North Mankato Family Dentistry, our doctors design your personalized treatment plan and carefully monitor your progress.
What are the benefits of Invisalign® compared to braces?
Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign® aligners are nearly invisible, so most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them. They’re also more comfortable since there are no brackets or wires to irritate your cheeks or gums. Plus, because they’re removable, you can continue enjoying your favorite foods and easily brush and floss your teeth.
How long does Invisalign® treatment take?
Treatment times vary based on your unique needs, but most patients complete their Invisalign® journey in less than two years. For best results, aligners should be worn 20–22 hours per day. Not wearing them as directed can extend your treatment time or affect your results.
Is Invisalign® painful?
Invisalign® aligners are designed for comfort and don’t cause the rubbing or poking often associated with braces. You may notice mild pressure or sensitivity for the first few days after switching to a new set of trays. This is normal, it means your teeth are moving as planned. Any discomfort is usually temporary and fades quickly.
How should I clean my aligners?
Rinse your aligners every time you remove them and clean them daily with clear, unscented antibacterial soap. If using toothpaste, choose a gentle, non-whitening brand to avoid damaging the plastic. Be sure to brush and floss your teeth after meals before putting your aligners back in to prevent bacteria buildup, odors, or staining.
Are there foods I should avoid with Invisalign®?
Since aligners are removable, you can enjoy most foods. However, it’s best to avoid eating while wearing them. Hard foods like raw carrots, sticky treats such as gum or caramel, and hard candies can damage aligners. When it comes to drinks, stick to water while your aligners are in, coffee, tea, soda, and wine can stain or weaken the trays.
